About the Intensive
Join Jose Agudo and Agudo Dance Company for a 4-day intensive that celebrates rhythm, creativity, and physicality in contemporary dance. This workshop is designed for dancers looking to challenge themselves artistically and physically, with a focus on rhythm composition, musicality, and collaboration with composers.
Participants will work with material from Jose Agudo’s dynamic repertoire, which draws on the rhythmic traditions of Kathak and Flamenco, reimagined through a contemporary lens. Alongside this, you will explore soft acrobatics — learning to enter and exit the ground with flow, ease, and power.
What to Expect:
-Learn repertoire from Jose Agudo’s internationally acclaimed works
-Explore rhythmic patterns, deconstruction, and improvisation
-Experiment with creating your own material through rhythm and texture
-Develop tools for working creatively with composers
-Incorporate elements of soft acrobatics and dynamic floor work to expand your physical vocabulary
Expect a supportive, energetic, and creatively charged environment where rhythm and physicality become the foundation for new choreographic possibilities.
Limited Places Available
To ensure high-quality, personalised feedback and a focused experience, places are strictly limited. Early booking is highly recommended.
Who is it for?
This workshop is ideal for professional dancers, dance students, and movement artists looking to enrich their choreographic and physical practice with rhythm, dynamic floor work, and collaboration.
About Jose Agudo
José Agudo began his career in Andalusia, performing as a Flamenco dancer. Over time, his interest in contemporary dance grew, leading him to perform throughout Europe with companies including Metros, Charleroi/Danses, Ballet de Marseille, T.R.A.S.H, Shobana Jeyasingh Dance, and Akram Khan Company.
From 2010 to 2017, José worked as Rehearsal Director and Assistant Choreographer for Akram Khan Company, contributing to several productions, including the London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony.
In 2010, under the guidance of Akram Khan, José began studying Kathak. Recognising strong parallels between Kathak and his early Flamenco training, he reconnected with his roots and began to explore traditional forms within a contemporary context. This exploration led to the founding of Agudo Dance Company in 2017. His creations Silk Road, Carmen, and Hero are touring internationally.
José’s work spans a wide range of forms, moving fluidly between Flamenco, Indian dance, Kathak, ballet, and physical theatre. His distinctive choreographic voice blends these influences, bringing a rich physicality and cultural depth to contemporary performance.
His independent choreographic commissions include works for Phoenix Dance Theatre, Norrdans, ZfinMalta National Dance Company, Cape Dance Company, ACE Dance and Music, Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance, English National Ballet School, BODHI Project SEAD, The Place, London Studio Centre, Area Jeune Ballet, Festival Internacional de Música y Danza de Granada, Northern School of Contemporary Dance, MAP University of Chichester, as well as collaborations with London Mozart Players and Subrang Arts.
Since 2019, José has expanded into the worlds of musical theatre, publicity, and commercial performance. He was Associate Choreographer for Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club and choreographed the flamenco scenes while performing as the character Rico in Baz Luhrmann’s Strictly Ballroom the Musical in the UK and Denmark.
In 2019, he choreographed and performed at the Opening Ceremony of the Davis Cup by Rakuten in Madrid and featured in the Madrid Tourism publicity campaign in 2024.
Most recently, in 2024, José served as Assistant Director and Movement Director for Journey of a Refugee, an immersive physical theatre experience directed by Sue Buckmaster and produced by Theatre-Rites in collaboration with Agudo Dance Company.
José is a sought-after guest choreographer, teacher, and lecturer at leading dance institutions worldwide, recognised for his work in blending Indian and Flamenco traditions with contemporary movement practices.
He is a certified Yoga Teacher (Yoga Alliance) and holds a Postgraduate Diploma with Distinction in Contemporary Dance from the University of Kent. He is also featured in the latest edition of 50 Contemporary Choreographers, an international publication by Routledge.
José is currently developing a new full-length work, Quixote: In Your Mind.
