Choreographic Intensive Workshop with Javier De Frutos

The Javier De Frutos Choreographic Intensive is part of our special celebration honouring the International Stage, where in June, we celebrate Latin American countries and artists with a focus on the remarkable contributions of Venezuelan choreographer Javier De Frutos. This event highlights the intersection of international stage arts and the vibrant cultural influences of Latin America, celebrating De Frutos’ legacy in the global dance community.

Overview:

This 3-day Choreography Intensive with acclaimed choreographer Javier De Frutos is designed for both emerging and experienced choreographers looking to sharpen their craft and expand their creative approach. Through a series of physical tasks, theory-based discussions, and personal mentoring, this intensive will help you develop your own choreographic language while boosting your productivity, time management, and attention to detail.

Whether you are at the front of the studio creating or contributing to the choreographic process as a dancer, this intensive will give you invaluable tools that can be applied in a variety of professional settings.


Workshop Details:

  • Creative Development: Explore physical tasks and exercises that challenge your creativity, enhance your technical skills, and build your confidence in choreography.
  • Personal Mentoring: Receive tailored guidance from Javier De Frutos, allowing you to focus on your individual choreographic goals.
  • Time Management & Productivity: Learn how to manage the creative process more effectively, improving your ability to work efficiently while maintaining a high standard of work.
  • Craft & Attention to Detail: Deepen your understanding of movement and develop a nuanced approach to choreography that aligns with your personal style and vision.

Special Opportunity:
As a benefit of attending, participants will have the chance to receive a direct pass to the Carlos Acosta Residency Programmes for 2026. Javier De Frutos will select one attendee from the workshop to be awarded the Carlos Acosta Choreographic Residency for 2026.

  • Residency 2025 (Digital Project): In 2025, the residency focused on digital dance work—a cutting-edge project exploring the intersection of choreography and technology.
  • Residency 2026: The details of the 2026 residency are yet to be announced, but one workshop participant will be selected to receive a special place in this prestigious residency programme.

Important Information:

  • Full Intensive Commitment: Attendance for all 3 days is required. No single-day passes will be available.
  • Price: £150 for the full 3-day intensive. Limited availability, so early booking is advised (early bird price £100 – buy before 1 February 2025).

Javier De Frutos Bio:
Javier De Frutos is a renowned Spanish choreographer, director, filmmaker, and designer, born in Caracas, Venezuela. Over the years, he has earned numerous accolades, including multiple Olivier Award nominations. His work spans theatre, dance, film, and music videos, and he is widely respected for his innovative approach to choreography. Some of his most notable achievements include:

  • Olivier Award for Best Theatre Choreography for Cabaret (2007).
  • Evening Standard Award for The Most Incredible Thing in collaboration with Pet Shop Boys (2011).
  • Critics Circle Award for Milagros (Royal New Zealand Ballet, 2005) and Elsa Canasta (Rambert and Scottish Ballet, 2005).
  • His recent work includes a new piece for Acosta Danza titled 98 Días, which premiered at the Venice Biennale in 2023.
  • Chita Rivera Award for Best Choreography in a Feature Film for the National Theatre production of LONDON ROAD

Javier De Frutos is celebrated for his work with renowned companies such as The Royal Opera, The Royal Ballet, and National Theatre, and is highly regarded as a mentor and educator, especially for his Choreography and Composition Workshops.
