Floor Barre into Contemporary Choreography with Kim Amundsen
Saturday 4th of April 2026 | 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM
Level: Intermediate / Advanced
Style: Ballet & Contemporary
Discover the power and precision of the Boris Kniaseff (BK) Floor Barre technique, a method designed to strengthen, realign, and refine the dancer’s body, followed by a dynamic Contemporary choreography session that applies everything learned on the floor.
Why dancers should practise the BK Floor Barre technique
- Strengthens Muscles & Joints
Working on the floor removes the pressure of gravity, allowing dancers to correct placement and build strength safely and effectively.
- Releases Tension
The technique lengthens and strengthens muscles, releasing tension in the neck, hips, and joints.
- Improves Alignment
By focusing on precision and efficiency, BK Floor Barre helps correct long-standing alignment issues and muscular imbalances.
- Prevents & Aids Recovery from Injury
A gentle, low-impact method used by professional dancers during injury rehabilitation.
- Tones the Core, Hips & Legs
The structured floor-based sequence naturally sculpts and strengthens key areas essential for ballet and contemporary technique.
What to Expect in Class
This 2-hour Intermediate/Advanced session includes:
- BK Floor Barre (60 minutes)
Following a classical ballet structure, this floor-based sequence builds coordination, fine muscle tone, turnout stability, flexibility, and core strength. Kim focuses on individual alignment, explains common technical errors, and offers supportive exercises for injuries or tight areas.
- Contemporary Choreography (60 minutes)
Apply the BK principles immediately through expressive, physical Contemporary choreography. This section deepens body awareness, fluidity, and dynamic musicality.
About the BK Floor Barre Technique
The BK method draws from Graham-inspired floor work blended with classical ballet technique, creating a sophisticated, full-body, placement-focused training system. The class extends the traditional two-part ballet structure into three:
Floor Barre → Barre → Centre.
In this class, the Floor Barre is paired with Contemporary rather than a full classical centre, offering both technical precision and creative exploration.
